memento mori

2021

Directed by Rashi Mishra

Dopdi’s Song is a film based on Mahasweta Devi’s stories, namely, Five Women, Kunti and the Nishadins, and Draupadi. It investigates the philosophy of Dharma and the central event of the epic ‘Mahabharat’, i.e. the righteous war, from the perspective of indigenous communities, particularly the women, who have been historically marginalized. Tracing the roots of contemporary struggle of indigenous communities in India against caste-based discrimination and exploitation by state-corporate-religion nexus, the film explores how dominant Brahmanical interpretations of Hindu mythologies shape present day realities in the region.

This film is a part of a PhD research at the Theatre and Performance Studies department, Stanford University
